This diploma provides the skills required for competence in remedial massage practice and practitioners at this level may be self-employed as independent practitioners or may work within a larger health service.

The Diploma of Remedial Massage covers the provision of remedial massage treatment to clients with specific needs such as injury management, rehabilitation, palliative care, aged care, women and children. Practitioners at this level may supervise other massage therapists.

The education criteria for association Membership and for Approved Provider Status is:

  • Remedial Member – Diploma of Remedial Massage
  • Massage Member – Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice
    (not all Private Health Funds pay a benefit for a Massage (Cert IV level))

While studying in HETC, students should start to apply one massage association’s membership and follow their own policies to upgrade their membership. 

Diploma of Remedial Massage is required for eligibility for membership (AAMT, MAA, MA etc) and also for Approved Provider Status with the Private Health Funds (Medibank, HCF Bupa etc).

Please note that the education criteria as set by Medibank and HCF, which include:

  • Students study Diploma of Remedial Massage over a minimum duration period of 12 months (academic year) for full-time study
  • Study must be completed on campus
  • Completing components in private clinics and/ or shop fronts is not considered student clinical practicum hours or training
  • To graduate with a Diploma of Remedial Massage, students at HETC must have a record of having completed 200 practical hours (expected to attend to 100 patients) as required by the massage associations
  • The following practical components are to be studied on campus:

AAMT – Australian Association of Massage Therapists

MAA – Massage Association of Australia

MA – Massage Australia
